Kopps flavor forecast3/24/2024 ![]() ![]() The first stop was at Kopp’s Frozen Custard. I’ll think about the health repercussions of that theory if I happen to be traveling in the Midwest again very soon. So while taking a sojourn outside of Milwaukee this holiday week (my first time in the Midwest), I ate lots and lots of frozen custard, washed down with malt shakes and local beers. ![]() There is no greater failure for the food-obsessed than to refuse some regional specialty, whatever it may be. I’m a strong believer in eating whatever’s plentiful when traveling in unfamiliar territory. And I’m not at home, haven’t been for a week - I’m in the frozen custard capital of the world. ![]() In my estimation, there is little difference between (very rich) ice cream and frozen custard, except that frozen custard is not designed to be, and is therefore not typically, made at home. The entry states, “Frozen custard is usually prepared fresh at the place of sale, rather than stored.” They both can be served by the scoop, or in soft-serve form. Wikipedia attributes it to a higher temperature than ice cream when served also, its production to a fast-freezing barrel that churns out the product more quickly than traditional ice cream makers. Frozen custard, like its less-cold forebear, engages egg yolks in the emulsion, but so does rich ice creams. I have given these e-gift certificates as gifts and the recipients are forever grateful!!! Considering you are shipping two-day air with dry ice totaling about 25 lbs., you won't be surprised to find out that shipping costs are not minimal, but if you do the math and calculate the price per pint and that you can get two or three portions out of that pint, and how when you go out to dinner you'd pay at least as much for a dessert that isn't half as good as this is, you'll realize that this is a major bargain and wonder why you don't send Kopp's to yourself more often!!!! I am wondering that right now.Ice cream versus frozen custard: the parameters are loose. I just got a shipment the other day (after a friend sent me an e-gift) and I am soooo happy to open my freezer and make the difficult decision of which pint we'll tear into. As the note from Karl Kopp says in the package, it is recommended you let your custard sit and soften up a bit before eating - it's pretty darn close to being there (except you cannot get a Kopp's burger to accompany). Orders ship on Tuesdays two-day air in dry ice and so you must be able to take delivery on a Thursday. The flavors available depend on which ship date you choose as Kopp's makes special flavors on a schedule posted online. You can do this all online but this is the location that handles the shipments, fyi. For those of us who know and appreciate Kopp's frozen custard but don't live anywhere nearby, or for those of us who want to introduce this amazing stuff to our uninitiated friends living all over the U.S., I want to tell you that you can have Kopp's ship ten pints of their splendiferous frozen treat (you get to choose flavors) along with their hot fudge and famous salted pecans to yourself or anyone you wish!!! You can even buy someone an e-gift certificate so that they can choose their own and have it shipped at a date convenient for them. ![]()
